Big Island police arrested a 43-year-old male suspect less than nine hours after a North Kohala service station and convenience store was robbed on Sunday (December 12, 2004).
The suspect was identified as Charles Rivera Beach, of Holualoa, North Kona. He is being held in the Kona police cellblock pending further investigation by West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section Detectives.
Responding to a 9:50 a.m. call, North Kohala patrol officers determined that a Caucasian male wearing a handkerchief over his lower face entered the Island Shortstop and Deli in Hawi, brandished a firearm and demanded money from the cashier. After receiving an undetermined amount of cash, the robber left the establishment on foot.
Acting on witnesses’ descriptions of the suspect and his vehicle, West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives located the suspect and his vehicle at Spencer Beach Park in Kawaihae, South Kohala.
At 6:45 p.m., detectives arrested Beach and seized an older model rust-colored Ford pickup truck pending a search warrant. Officers also arrested Beach on two outstanding bench warrants and are holding him in the Kona police cellblock pending further investigation.
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Detective Bradley Freitas of the West Hawaii CIS at 326-4646, Ext. 228, or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
