East Hawaii Criminal Investigations Section detectives have charged a 25-year-old man and two accomplices for their alleged involvement in several criminal investigations.
Arrested were Sheldon R. Quevedo, of no permanent address; Malia Duvauchelle, 26, of Hilo; Scott K. Mahi Sr., 26, of Keaau; and Kevin K. Kuhia, 25, of Pahoa.
On Saturday (June 19, 2004), police responded to a report of an unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle in which the victimÕs purse and contents were removed from a vehicle. Among the items taken were the victimÕs credit cards.
Police issued an all points bulletin for a white 1992 Ford van after learning someone had used the victimÕs credit cards at Tesoro Gas Station in Hilo.
About 9:50 a.m., South Hilo patrol officers spotted the vehicle near the Prince Kuhio Plaza, where Quevedo was identified as an occupant. On spotting police, Quevedo jumped out of the van and ran. After a brief foot pursuit and struggle, police arrested Quevedo on an outstanding warrant as well as for various offenses stemming from the earlier reported incident. Duvauchelle, Mahi and Kuhia remained in the van and were arrested without incident.
Detectives charged Quevedo with fraudulent use of a credit card, two counts of resisting arrest, theft of a credit card, forgery and theft. Quevedo’s bail was set at $6,300 bail. In addition, Quevedo was also being held Wednesday without bail at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center on an unrelated warrant.
Duvauchelle was charged with fraudulent use of a credit card, forgery, theft and theft of a credit card. Her bail was set at $2,200. She is being held at the HCCC.
Detectives charged Mahi with forgery and attempted theft, and his bail was set at $4,000. He is now on supervised release.
Kuhia was released pending further investigation.
Detectives are continuing their investigations into similar cases possibly involving Quevedo, Duvauchelle and Mahi, including cases that allegedly occurred in South Hilo, Hamakua, South Kohala and Kona. Upon completing the investigations, the additional cases will be forwarded to the prosecutor for possible grand jury action.
