MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE
Police have arrested a 21-year-old suspect who allegedly injured a community policing officer on July 3, 2003, by dragging him behind his vehicle.
Acting on a tip from residents, South Kohala Patrol officers arrested Timothy Jackson, of no permanent address, at 4:40 p.m. Saturday (July 12, 2003) at Spencer Beach Park.
Jackson was charged with assault on a police officer, reckless endangering and resisting an order to stop as well as other charges stemming from the July 3 incident and from outstanding warrants. He was held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $26,250 bail
Also known as Marwan Timothy Jackson, the suspect was wanted for the dragging incident, which occurred about 7 p.m. during a function at the Pahoa Community Center.
The injured officer, a 14-year veteran assigned to the Puna Community Policing Unit, had observed a motorist driving in a reckless manner in the parking lot. After flagging the motorist down on Kau Hale Street and talking with the driver, the vehicle accelerated, catching the officer’s arm in the window and dragging him about 30 feet before he got his arm loose. The motorist then left the area at a high rate of speed.
The officer was treated by medics at the Pahoa Fire Station for abrasions to his arms, back and legs.
