Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives are investigating the third pipe bomb explosion in two weeks in Hilo.

The latest explosion occurred Tuesday night (January 11, 2000) in the parking lot of Ken’s Pancake House on Kamehameha Avenue.

A restaurant employee called police at 10:43 p.m. to report hearing a loud explosion coming from the parking lot.

Tuesday’s explosion was the third within two weeks caused by pipe bombs, but detectives said they don’t know whether the three explosions are related.

Shortly after midnight Friday (January 7, 2000), an explosion caused minor damage to the Social Security Administration office at 1778 Kinoole Street. And shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, 1999, an explosion caused an undetermined amount of damage to a vehicle parked on Hoku Street.

Police are asking that anyone who sees anything suspicious to call them at 935-3311. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept strictly confidential.
