Thirteen members of the Hawaii County Police Department’s 64th Recruit class graduated Friday (February 18, 2005) during ceremonies held at Hilo’s Nani Mau Gardens Restaurant.

The police graduates have undergone seven months of intensive classroom training and will now undergo nine more weeks of on-the-job field training after being assigned to veteran police officers.

Jack Matsukawa, county deputy prosecutor, was the keynote speaker during ceremonies.

Also making remarks were Mayor Harry Kim, Hawaii Police Commission Chairman John M. Bertsch, Hawaii County Council Chairman Gary Safarik, Police Chief Lawrence K. Mahuna and Recruit Class President Cory R.F. Hasegawa.

Two of the graduates received special recognition for their excellence in training. Henry C. Ivy was recognized for excelling in firearms training. Earl P.K. Haskell, class vice president, was recognized for excelling in both physical and academic training and was named overall outstanding recruit.

Graduates of the 64th Recruit Class are Hasegawa, Haskell, Kyle H. Hirayama, Shawn A. Ibarra, Ivy, Gavin K. Kagimoto, Davy H. Kamalii, Jenny K. Lee, Kala’e R. Lee, Victor K. McLellan, Mekia K. Rose, Levon P. Stevens and Randolph T. Tafua. Rose served as class secretary-treasurer.

The class supervisors for the 64th Recruit Class were Sergeant Jason Y. Shinoda and Officer Christopher Ragasa.
