East Hawaii detectives have charged three individuals with crimes of violence in connection with a near riot situation officers encountered early in the morning this past Thursday morning (12-15-05).
At about 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning (12-15-05), South Hilo patrol officers responded to a reported affray involving several male parties in the parking lot of an apartment complex on East Kawili street. While the officers were trying to diffuse the situation, a crowd of approximately twenty swelled around them. As they continued their efforts to disperse the group, four officers were injured when three members of the crowd began attacking them. Three of the officers were taken to the Hilo Medical Center where they were treated for their injuries and later released. All three suspects were arrested at the scene and taken to the Hilo police station.
On Friday (12-16-05) at 2:30 p. m., detectives charged 22 year-old Samuelu Aulava and 23 year-old Edwin J. Smith each with two counts of first degree assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. Also charged was 22 year old Jason Crichton, of Hilo with attempted first degree assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. Bail for Aulava and Smith was set at $4,500 each and $2,500 for Crichton. All three suspects are being held at the Hilo cellblock in lieu of bail pending their initial court appearance.
