MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE
Big Island police arrested three male teenagers Wednesday (April 20, 2005) after they got into a car crash in a stolen vehicle.
Responding to a 6:45 p.m. call from a resident of Sunrise Ridge, police spotted the three, all 16 years of age, walking down Kukuau Street and arrested them without incident.
The three suspects, whose names are being withheld because they are juveniles, were released pending further investigation. Two of the juveniles, however, were placed in juvenile lockup for unrelated warrants.
Police had warned residents of Hilo’s Kaumana area Wednesday to be on the lookout for three male suspects who might be armed and dangerous. Officers found no weapons on the three when they were arrested, however.
The incident began about 2 p.m. when a South Hilo patrol officer driving up Kaumana Drive near Chong Street spotted a 2004 four-door Cadillac heading in the opposite direction. The officer recognized the vehicle as being reported stolen.
The officer tried to turn his car around, but by the time he did so, he lost sight of the stolen car and did not attempt to pursue it.
As he was driving down Kaumana, he came upon the scene of a car crash involving the stolen car at Kaumana Drive, Ainako Avenue and the Mohouli Extension.
The three suspects in the stolen car fled the scene on foot into the underbrush. The injured occupant of the second car was taken to the Hilo Medical Center for treatment of injuries.
The police helicopter was called in to search for the three suspects in the Wainaku area.
The Cadillac was stolen Tuesday night (April 19, 2005) from a Wainaku residence. The keys to the vehicle had been stolen in a burglary several days before.
