
Police Chief Lawrence K. Mahuna was named to the police chief’s position by the Hawaii County Police Commission on December 9, 2002. He took over as acting police chief on August 15, 2002, when former Chief James S. Correa retired. Mahuna previously served as assistant chief in charge of the Administrative Bureau. Mahuna joined the Police Department as a recruit in February 1973. During his police career, Mahuna has served as a detective in the Vice Section and Criminal Investigation Section, captain in command of the North Kohala Patrol District and South Kohala Patrol District and major in charge of the Technical Services Division in the Administrative Bureau. He was promoted to assistant chief in December 1998. Mahuna is a graduate of Kamehameha High School and graduated from Washington State University with a bachelor of science degree in psychology.
