Media Release

Motorists are advised to be aware of pedestrians in traffic this weekend in Hilo and Kona for the 2011 Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run/Walk for Special Olympics.

On Saturday (April 9), runners and walkers will be on the road between the Kea’au police station and Kea’au High School between approximately 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

On Sunday (April 10), participants will be on the road between approximately 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. They will travel from First Hawaiian Bank on Palani Road in Kailua-Kona and proceed west on Ali’i Drive to the Hualālai Road intersection, then turn around and travel east on Ali’i Drive to the Kailua Pier.

In both cases, police escorts with flashing blue lights will travel in front of and behind the participants to alert motorists to avoid that lane of travel.

The Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run is a coordinated project of the Hawai’i Police Department and Special Olympics Hawai’i to raise awareness and funds for the athletes of Special Olympics. All 50 U.S. states and more than 47 countries participate in the event, generating more than $34 million annually. In Hawai’i, the Torch Run is named after fallen Honolulu Police Officer Troy Barboza, who volunteered as a Special Olympics coach and participated in the first Torch Run in Hawai’i, which was held in 1986.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Torch Run in Hawai’i.
