MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii Police Department is sponsoring the 2006 Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Run this weekend (April 22-23, 2006) to raise awareness and money for Special Olympics Hawaii.

The East Hawaii run will begin at the Keaau police station at 8 a.m. Saturday and end at the Keaau High School Track. There the Special Olympics torch will be passed to a Special Olympics participant, who will signal the start of the events. The West Hawaii run will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday at “The Club” on Palani Road. It will go down and back up Alii Drive and end where it started.

Participants will receive a commemorative “Torch Run” T-shirt or tank top for a $20 donation. Persons who don’t wish to participate may still receive a commemorative shirt for making the donation.

T-shirts are available at all Big Island branches of First Hawaiian Bank, the event’s corporate sponsor.

The Torch Run began in 1981 in Wichita, Kansas. It has since been adopted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and is held in all 50 states and more than 40 countries worldwide. Since 1981, the torch run has raised more than $130 billion worldwide.

Hawaii has the honor of having the only torch run named after a fallen officer. Officer Troy Barboza was a Honolulu Police Officer who ran the first Hawaii Torch Run in 1986 and was also a Special Olympics coach.
