MEDIA RELEASE

East Hawaii Ice Task Force and Vice Section officers have arrested two male suspects after executing a search warrant and recovering more than 40 grams of crystal methamphetamine, or “ice,” and a smaller amount of cocaine in one of the suspects’ vehicle.

Arrested at 9:30 a.m. Saturday (January 22, 2005) were Francis “Adobo” Carter, 36, of a Hilo address, and Eddie Chatman, 22, of no permanent address.

Carter was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, one count of second-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, one count of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and three counts of illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Arrested for promotion of a dangerous drug, Chatman was released pending further investigation.

Acting on a tip, task force and vice officers spotted Carter driving a 2001 blue Ford MPVH with no license plates in the parking lot of the Puainako Town Center. After the suspect refused to consent to a search of his vehicle, police called in a narcotics dog, which alerted officers to the presence of illegal drugs.

Obtaining a warrant, the officers searched the vehicle and recovered 43.6 grams of “ice,” with an estimated street value of $6,000, and 3.1 grams of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $300. They also seized $1,800 in cash, a safe in the rear of the vehicle and the vehicle itself for possible forfeiture.

Police say they will continue their islandwide crackdown on the use and distribution of crystal methamphetamine and other illegal drugs.
