Police have charged two men for an alleged assault on a 33-year-old Hilo man who has been hospitalized in critical condition since Saturday (October 26, 2002).
At 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Daniel Vea, 32, and Levy Cabanting, 25, both of King’s Landing, were charged with first-degree assault. The two, arrested Monday, are being held without bail at the Hilo police cellblock.
The victim, identified as Darrell Wheeler, 33, of a Keaukaha address, is confined in critical condition with head injuries at the Hilo Medical Center.
Responding to a call Saturday afternoon, police found the victim lying unconscious on the ground at a Kalanianaole Street address.
Anyone with information about Saturday’s incident is asked to call Detective Tom Poy of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2383 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
