Two girls who were killed Monday (July 8, 2002) when they were run over by their family pickup truck have been identified.

The girls were killed in accident occurred in the driveway of their residence located on a private road off Highway 11 (Hawaii BeltRoad) near the 113-mile marker in Kainaliu, North Kona.

Responding to an 8:27 a.m. report, the officers determined that the two girls were sitting in a Ford F-350 four-door truck while it was still stationary. The three-year-old child then got out of the vehicle, followed by the 12-year-old. Shortly thereafter, the truck, whose operator was not present, rolled backward down the sloped driveway and ran over both children.

Both victims were transported to the Kona Community Hospital where the three year-old girl was pronounced dead at 10:54 a.m. The twelve year-old girl was pronounced dead at 10:55 a.m.

Officers assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Unit are continuing an investigation into the cause of the accident. As part of their investigation they have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death for both victims. A mechanical inspection will also be conducted on the vehicle involved.

Police had withheld the identities of the victims Monday until members of their family could be notified.
