MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives have charged two men with escape in separate incidents.

Twenty-six year-old Abraham Verece, who escaped from the Hale Nani minimum security facility in the early morning hours of April 4, 2005 turned himself in to personnel at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center (HCCC) on Tuesday (January 10, 2006). The police were summoned and Verece was arrested for the escape in addition to an outstanding warrant for revocation of his probation. He was transported to the Hilo police cellblock to be processed for identification purposes and later taken back to HCCC where he is currently being held without bail.

The second arrest came when Puna officers learned that Alan J. Dias was at a residence in the Ainaloa Subdivision shortly after midnight Saturday (January 7, 2006). He was arrested there without incident. Dias was wanted on an outstanding warrant for revocation of parole in addition to an investigation involving an auto theft and escape for running away from a police officer who had arrested him on the evening of December 21, 2005. At that time, Dias was driving a suspected stolen vehicle which was stopped by the officer for a defective headlight. When the officer was in the process of completing the arrest, Dias fled on foot. Dias was charged with second degree escape but was released on the auto theft offense pending further investigation. His bail for the escape charge was set at $1,000. He was taken to HCCC where he is being held without bail for the revocation warrant.
