MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in investigating a variety of offenses, including two robberies, a sexual assault, a burglary and impersonating a police officer, all apparently committed by the same man Saturday (November 11, 2000).

South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a 4:54 a.m. call of a reported robbery at an Olona Street address in Hilo. An investigation determined that a 32-year-old male was held up at gunpoint. The assailant demanded money and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

About 7:54 a.m., Hilo patrol officers responded to a call from the same area. There, a female adult reported that a male forced his way into her residence, threatened her with a firearm, demanded money, sexually assaulted her and fled the residence with an undisclosed amount of cash. She said the suspect identified himself as a police officer in order to gain entry.

Witnesses in both robberies gave similar descriptions of the perpetrator. The suspect was described as being a local male in his 30s or 40s, being about 5-feet-7 in height, weighing about 175 pounds and having a tan complexion and a salt-and-pepper-colored goatee.

In the first robbery, the suspect was described as wearing a dark-colored plaid shirt and dark-colored shorts. In the second, he was described as wearing a light blue T-shirt with a square white logo in the front and a white leaf inside the logo.

Anyone with information about either robbery or about the identity of the suspect is asked to call Detective Randal Ishii of the Juvenile Aid Section at 961-2385, Detective Dana Chong Tim of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2380 or the regular police number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
