MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

During the two-week “National Click It or Ticket Campaign,” Big Island police issued more than 350 seat belt and child restraint citations.

During the period of November 17 through 30, 2003, police issued citations for 343 seat belt and 17 child restraint violations.

Mayor Harry Kim had proclaimed the two-week period as a “National Click It or Ticket Campaign.”

In conjunction with the mayor’s proclamation, the Hawaii County Police Department joined more than 13,000 law enforcement agencies in the national “Click It or Ticket” mobilization.

As part of the campaign, officers intensified enforcement of seat belt laws by setting up seat belt checkpoints. Drivers failing to restrain themselves and their child passengers were ticketed and are subject to a $77 fine.

So far this year, Big Island officers have issued 5,201 seat belt citations and 274 child restraint citations.
