An unidentified Big Island man was killed Sunday (December 9, 2001) after being involved in a one-vehicle traffic accident on Pohoiki Road about 0.2 miles east of the junction of Pohoiki Road and Route 132 in the Puna District.

Responding to an 11:24 p.m. call, Puna police determined that the driver was operating a light blue, two-door 1988 Plymouth Reliant when the sedan went out of control and ran off the left side of the road, striking a utility pole. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle.

The driver was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:23 a.m. Monday.

The identity of the driver could not be immediately determined, and police are asking anyone with information about the accident or the identity of the driver to call Officer Robert Hatton of the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 961-2332.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing an investigation into the fatality and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Sunday’s fatality was the 28th of the year so far on the Big Island, compared to 37 at the same time last year.
