MEDIA RELEASE

A pickup truck struck a utility pole on Hualalai Road in Kailua-Kona early Thursday morning (April 21, 2005), causing a road closure through most of the day.

Shortly before 2 a.m., Kona patrol officers responding to a one-car crash on Hualalai determined that a 1993 Ford pickup truck had struck a HELCO utility pole, causing it to fall onto the road near the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union. By the time the officers arrived, the driver of the vehicle had fled the scene.

The fallen light pole caused police to completely close Hualalai Road between the intersections with Kuakini Highway and Nani Kailua Drive. Officers remained at the entrances to the closed road until county road crews arrived and set up barricades at the two intersections.

Shortly after the accident, HELCO crews arrived and reported that the road would be closed until at least 3 p.m.

Investigating the crash, patrol officers determined that Patrick Acol, 34, of Kailua-Kona, was the driver of the vehicle.

Acol was issued traffic citations for three criminal violations — leaving the scene of an accident, causing an accident involving damage to property and driving while his license was suspended.
