MEDIA RELEASE

Officers from the Hilo Vice Section and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration have arrested three suspects after discovering more than a pound of crystal methamphetamine Monday (July 22, 2002) at the Federal Express office at the Hilo International Airport.

The male suspects, arrested at a residence in Fern Acres, Puna, were identified as Jarret Kaneshiro, 24, Johnathan Histo, 19, and Mandel K. Mitte, 38. They are being held in the Hilo police cellblock pending further investigation by vice and DEA officers.

The crystal methamphetamine, or “ice,” was found during normal police narcotics scanning of parcels shipped to the Big Island.

After the Vice Section’s narcotics canine alerted officers to a package at the Fed Ex office, the officers obtained a search warrant and found 472 grams of “ice” in the package.

The officers then made a controlled delivery to a residence on Lehua Street in Fern Acres.

When a person at the residence accepted the shipment, the officers served a second search warrant. During a subsequent search, they found 236 marijuana plants growing on the property and at 1:40 p.m. arrested three persons at the residence.
