A Hamakua man died Friday morning (January 12, 2001) following a one-vehicle traffic crash that occurred last month in Honokaa.
The victim was identified Zamora Asuncion, 79, of a Paahau address.
Responding to a 3:25 p.m. call on December 26, 2000, police officers determined that victim was driving a 1990 Geo sedan north on Plumeria Street when he apparently lost control of the car at the intersection of Lehua Street and struck an embankment on the northwest corner of the intersection.
The victim was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital and later flown to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for treatment of head injuries.
He later succumbed to the injuries suffered in the crash and was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m. Friday at Queen’s.
A front-seat passenger, Alberta Asuncion, 75, of the same address, had also been transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital, but her condition could not be determined Friday.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing an investigation into the accident and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
The driver reportedly was not wearing his seat belt, but his passenger was. The death was counted as the 39th traffic fatality of the year 2000, compared to 31 fatalities during 1999.
