MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE
The results of an autopsy conducted in Honolulu have determined that a Hamakua man died last month of natural causes and not as the result of a traffic accident last December in Honokaa.
The autopsy report said that the victim, identified as Zamora Asuncion, 79, of Paahau, died of bleeding in the brain, which caused the victim’s 1990 Geo sedan to veer off the road and strike an embankment.
Asuncion died on January 12, 2001, at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he had been taken after the one-vehicle crash.
An investigation determined that on December 26, 2000, the victim was driving a 1990 Geo sedan north on Plumeria Street when he apparently lost control of the car at the intersection of Lehua Street and struck an embankment on the northwest corner of the intersection.
The victim was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital and later flown to Queen’s, where he died the following month.
As a result of the autopsy results, police have revised traffic fatality statistics for the year 2000. The fatality count for 2000 now stands at 38, compared to 31 fatalities during 1999.
