MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives have tentatively identified a female victim who died in a shooting Friday evening (January 4, 2002) in an incident on Lina Poepoe Street in South Kohala.

The victim is believed to be Cathalene Ann Pacheco, 42, of Waikoloa, wife of the arrested suspect, Albert Pacheco, a detective assigned to the Kona Criminal Identification Section. Positive identification of the victim will be made through either fingerprints or dental records.

Pacheco, 45, also of Waikoloa, was off-duty at the time of the shooting incident.

Police have recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting, and the firearm will be sent to the Honolulu police crime laboratory for ballistic and forensic testing.

Police have also ordered an autopsy scheduled for Sunday morning at the Hilo Medical Center to determine the exact cause of death.

Police investigators are continuing to conduct follow-ups and interviewing people to determine a motive for the shooting.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Friday, South Kohala patrol officers responded to a reported shooting and traffic accident in Waikoloa, South Kohala.

At approximately 7:25 p.m., the patrol officers arrested Pacheco after it was determined that the male driver of a vehicle had shot the woman driver of another vehicle.

Pacheco was arrested at the scene without incident and was transported to the South Kohala station. From there, he was subsequently transported to the Hilo police station, where he is confined to the police cellblock pending further investigation.

The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Pacheco had intentionally driven his vehicle into the victim’s car, blocking it, and then shot the victim several times.
