Big Island detectives charged a 25-year-old Pāhoa man with multiple crimes of violence stemming from two separate incidents in Pāhoa.

Wednesday (December 7) at 1:10 p.m., detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section charged Michael Dwayne Carvalho with one count each of third-degree assault and first-degree terroristic threatening.

These charges were the result of a confrontation in Pāhoa between Carvalho and a 32-year-old Pāhoa man on December 3 around 6:49 p.m. Carvalho allegedly assaulted the victim and threatened him with a sharp instrument. The victim was not seriously injured.

Carvalho was also charged with three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, three counts of kidnapping and one count of third-degree assault.

Those charges were related to an incident that reportedly occurred on December 4 around 9:30 a.m. at a home in Nanawale in which Carvalho allegedly threatened a 19-year-old woman, a 41-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man with another edged weapon and prevented them from leaving the home. The victims managed to escape after Carvalho was distracted. They subsequently reported the incident to police. The 19-year-old woman sustained minor injuries and declined medical treatment.

Carvalho’s combined bail for both incidents was set at $58,000. He was held at the Hilo police cellblock pending his initial court appearance Thursday (December 8) in South Hilo District Court.
