Visitor from Oklahoma dies in apparent Ka’u drowning 12-16-04

A 33-year-old visitor from Oklahoma was killed Thursday (December 16, 2004) after being swept to sea at South Point, Ka’u.

The victim was identified as Darren Fain, of Jennings, Oklahoma.

Responding to a 1:02 p.m. call, Ka’u police determined that Fain was sightseeing and trying to take photographs by the ocean when he was swept away by a large wave while posing for a photograph.

Fire rescue personnel retrieved the victim from the ocean about 3:45 p.m. and took him to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:27 p.m.

Police have classified the case as a public accident and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
