MEDIA RELEASE

A 50-year-old male visitor from Killingworth, Connecticut, was victimized twice within minutes while walking along Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona early Wednesday (July 13, 2005).

The victim, identified as Derrick Schull, told police he was walking south along Alii Drive about 3:25 a.m. just north of Lunapule Road when a dark-colored sports utility vehicle stopped alongside him. The victim said three dark-complexioned males in their 30s got out and demanded his wallet. The suspects then forcibly took the wallet and its contents and drove off in a southerly direction.

About five minutes later, the victim said, four Caucasian males, two juveniles and two young adults, walked out of some bushes, confronted him and demanded his wallet. When the victim told them he had no wallet, the two young adults punched and kicked him, then all fled the area. The victim suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention.

He described his assailants as wearing surf shorts. Two were wearing shirts and two were shirtless, he said.

Kona police have initiated robbery and assault investigations into the two incidents.
