MEDIA RELEASE

A police substation in Volcano is now in operation.

The substation at Cooper Center officially opened with an open house on July 4, 2006, in conjunction with the Volcano Community Association’s annual parade. It had been available for use by officers assigned to the Puna district since mid-June. The officers now may use the substation to write their reports when they are working in the area.

Although the station isn’t staffed around the clock, officers from all three shifts have access to it 24 hours a day.

Captain Steven Guillermo, commander of the Puna District, said the substation will greatly reduce the distance officers have to travel to complete reports and will reduce response times for calls by residents in upper Puna.

Volcano resident Betsy Mitchell said the community is “extremely pleased” with the new substation and the added police presence.
