MEDIA RELEASE

A 63-year-old female visitor from California died Friday (April 7, 2000) following a two-vehicle collision that occurred earlier in the day at the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Route 19) and Waikoloa Beach Drive in South Kohala.

The victim was identified as Winifred McGuire of Visalia, California.

Responding to a 10:19 a.m. call, police officers determined that a rented 1999 Pontiac van driven by Terry Lee Klumper Jr., 29, a visitor from Spring Lake, Michigan, was heading north on Queen Kaahumanu when it attempted to turn left onto Waikoloa Beach Drive and collided with a rented 2000 Toyota Camry heading south on the highway.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as Raymond Marlin, 62, of Visalia, California, and his three passengers were transported to the Kona Community Hospital after the crash. Klumper, who suffered minor injuries, refused treatment at the scene.

McGuire, who had been a back seat passenger in the Toyota, later died after surgery at the hospital and was pronounced dead at 2:40 p.m.

Marlin was treated and released from the hospital. The two other passengers in his car were later flown to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for further treatment of injuries. They were identified as Leroy Costa, 61, a front seat passenger, who suffered a broken hip, and his wife, Perle Costa, 61, a back seat passenger, who suffered broken legs. Both are from Visalia, California.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing an investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. A standard negligent homicide case and two negligent injury cases have been initiated.

McGuire’s death was the eighth traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared with three at the same time last year.
