MEDIA RELEASE

An unidentified woman believed to be residing in Waikoloa died Thursday morning (September 23, 1999) after she was struck late Wednesday night while crossing Paniolo Avenue just above Hooko Street in Waikoloa, South Kohala.

Police have tentatively identified the victim, but are withholding her name pending making positive identification and notifying her next of kin.

Responding to a 9:53 p.m. accident call, police officers determined that the victim was crossing Paniolo Avenue on foot heading east when she was struck by a 1993 Chevrolet van driven north by Diane Hooke, 45, of Waikoloa. The victim was transported to the Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:27 a.m.

The victim was wearing dark-colored clothing and wasn’t in a crosswalk when she was struck. Hooke, the only occupant of the van, was not injured in the accident.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have opened a standard negligent homicide investigation into the accident.

This was the 23rd traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared to 28 at the same time last year.
