Three people were killed and two seriously injured after a two-vehicle head-on collision on Saturday (September 5) on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 19), 92 feet west of Mana Road in Waimea.
Responding to an 11:48 p.m. call, South Kohala patrol officers determined that a 32-year-old Waimea man was operating a 2008 Chevrolet four-door station wagon and traveling west on Mamalahoa Highway when the vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with a 1999 Mercury multi-purpose vehicle traveling east and being operated by a 47-year-old Kea’au man.
The 32-year-old Waimea man and a 30-year-old female passenger died at the scene. The couple’s two children in the vehicle, a 5-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl were transported by Fire Rescue to North Hawaii Community Hospital.
The 5-year-old boy was pronounced dead at 12:32 a.m.
The 8-year-old girl was listed in critical condition.
The 30-year-old female was identified as Suzanne Ng and the boy was identified as Aidon Ng, both of Waimea.
The name of the 32-year-old driver was being withheld pending positive identification.
Suzanne Ng and the 8-year-old girl were wearing their seat belts while the driver and 5-year-old boy were not.
The driver of the Mercury multi-purpose vehicle was listed in guarded condition and being flown to The Queens Medical Center for further treatment. The driver was wearing his seat belt.
Police believe that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case, two negligent homicide cases and two negligent injury investigations.
