MEDIA RELEASE

Nineteen law enforcement officers from the Sheriff’s Division of the State Department of Public Safety are on the Big Island this week to help the Police Department reduce a backlog of outstanding warrants.

As of Monday (June 14, 1999), there were 2,737 outstanding warrants on the Big Island. The deputy sheriffs are spending the week helping Big Island police officers make a sweep of the South Hilo, Puna and Kona Districts to serve as many of them as possible.

On Monday a total of 60 warrants were served — 30 in South Hilo, 13 in Puna and 17 in Kona.

The Police Department is urging residents who know there is an outstanding warrant on them to turn themselves in to the nearest police station. Doing so will avoid being served a warrant at their residence or place of work.

Residents who want to find out if they are wanted on an outstanding warrant should call 961-8805.
