MEDIA RELEASE

As of Sunday (June 20, 1999), a sweep of county police officers and state deputy sheriffs resulted in a total of 384 warrants being served on the Big Island.

A total of 297 of the warrants were served on individuals, and another 87 were served either on individuals after the working hours of the sweep unit or over the weekend or on walk-ins to district police stations.

The sweep was held to reduce a backlog of more than 4,000 outstanding warrants on the Big Island. The deputy sheriffs were visiting to help Big Island police officers make a sweep of the South Hilo, Puna and Kona Districts.

Major David Kawauchi of Area I Field Operations said the Police Department intends to hold similar sweeps in the future to keep the backlog of outstanding warrants at a reduced level.

The Police Department is urging residents who know there is an outstanding warrant on them to turn themselves in to the nearest police station. Doing so will avoid being served a warrant at their residence or place of work.

Residents who want to find out if they are wanted on an outstanding warrant should call 961-8805 in Hilo or 326-4646 in Kona.
