Woman Charged in Child Abduction 12/27/99
HAWAII COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT
KONA JUVENILE AID SECTION
DETECTIVE WHITNEY D. JENKINS
DECEMBER 27, 1999
A 26-year-old Kona woman has been charged in the abduction of a female minor attending a Christmas Day party Saturday (December 25, 1999) at an Old Kona Airport Park pavilion.
Lenia Lewis, of Kailua-Kona, was charged Sunday with first-degree custodial interference; refusal to provide identification, a violation; and possession and consumption of intoxicating liquor, a violation. She was being held in the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $2,200 bail.
At 2:16 p.m. Saturday, Kona Patrol received a call that a female child was missing from the party at the pavilion. Witnesses said they saw a Caucasian woman take the child in a white two-door sedan. They were able to provide police with a partial license plate number.
At 4:52 p.m., the officers located the car elsewhere in the park. There, they arrested the woman and found the child unharmed.
After police learned that the woman had given the child an unknown pill, they took the girl to the Kona Community Hospital. When hospital personnel determined that the pill was a nonharmful dietary supplement, they released the girl.
At the park, Lewis was found with a male companion, Thomas Ray Estabrook, 39, of a Kona address. Although it was later determined that Estabrook had nothing to do with the abduction, police charged him on a $300 outstanding warrant. Officers at the scene also found two opened beers in Lewis’ car.
Kona JAS detectives are continuing the investigation.
