MEDIA RELEASE

A 21-year-old Kona woman died Sunday (June 25, 2000) of injuries she suffered in a single-vehicle crash in Opihihali, South Kona.

The victim was identified as Yolanda Momilani La Marco of Honaunau.

Responding to a 2:28 a.m. call, police officers determined that La Marco’s 1988 Toyota two-door sedan was traveling north on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) 320 feet north of the 96 milepost when it crossed the centerline and collided with a construction tractor parked on the makai shoulder of the roadway.

La Marco was flown by the Fire Department’s medical helicopter to the Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:17 a.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers will be continuing the investigation, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol was a factor in the crash.

La Marco’s death was the 19th traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared to 10 at the same time last year.
