MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police have arrested a Kona man in connection with a fatal auto-pedestrian crash Wednesday afternoon (July 26, 2006) near the Honalo transfer station.

In response to a 2:43 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that a Suzuki multi-purpose vehicle operated by a 62-year-old Captain Cook man apparently ran off the shoulder while traveling southbound on Route 180. It hit an 88-year-old woman who was working in her yard near the shoulder of the road between the 1- and 2- mile markers.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Suzuki was arrested at the scene on suspicion of negligent homicide. Officers took him to Kona Community Hospital for a mandatory blood draw to determine whether he was driving under the influence.

The accident has closed Route 180 between the Kona Coffee Villas and the Tanaka junction since around 3 p.m.

Officers from the Traffic Enforcement Unit will continue the investigation.
