MEDIA RELEASE (UPDATE)

An 88-year-old Honalo woman died Wednesday (July 26, 2006) from injuries she received in a motor vehicle/pedestrian crash on Route 180 one-half mile north of the Route 180/Kuakini Highway intersection.

The victim was identified as Mildred Mitamura.

Responding to a 2:43 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim was gardening in front of her home when a 62-year-old Captain Cook man driving south in a 1987 Suzuki multi-purpose vehicle ran off the right side of the road and struck the victim.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:26 p.m.

The driver of the Suzuki was arrested for negligent homicide and later released pending investigation.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 19th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 19 at this time last year.
