MEDIA RELEASE

A 34-year-old woman died of injuries she suffered in a one-vehicle crash Friday (November 26, 2004) on Hawaii Belt Road 405 feet south of the 26-mile marker.

The victim was identified as Kyoung Hee Lee, of a Kailua-Kona address

Responding to an 8:53 p.m. call, police determined that a 2005 GMC Envoy SUV driven by Myong Soo Kim, 23, of Kailua-Kona, was traveling toward Waimea when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road and overturned. The driver and all three passengers were ejected from the vehicle. Police believe that the occupants were not wearing their seat belts.

All four occupants were taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where the victim died about 12:45 a.m.

The other passengers of the vehicle — identified as Mihyun Ko, 34, Seung Wan Kim, 24, both of Kailua-Kona — were reported in stable condition at the Kona Community Hospital.

Speed is believed to have been a factor in this crash, and Traffic Enforcement Unit Officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The death was the 39th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 31 for the same time last year.
