MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police have identified a 54-year-old woman whose body was found Sunday (January 16, 2005) in a car submerged off the Pohoiki Boat Ramp in the Isaac Hale Beach Park in Puna.

The victim was identified as Janet Ruth Harless, of a Hawaiian Beaches address. The victim’s name was made public after her family in Oregon and California were notified of her death.

Responding to a 7:30 a.m. call Sunday, Puna patrol officers found the woman inside the submerged vehicle, a 1995 Ford Thunderbird two-door coupe.

Police believe that no foul play was involved in the woman’s death. East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section Detectives have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police are asking that if anyone saw the victim’s purple Thunderbird operating in the vicinity of Pohoiki in the early morning hours of Sunday or has any information about the incident to call Detective Juergen Canda at 961-2381 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
