MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Acting on a tip, Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives have arrested and charged an 18-year-old Hilo male with attempted murder as the result of a severe beating last February in downtown Hilo.

At 5 p.m. Thursday (May 4, 2001), detectives charged the youth with second-degree attempted murder. He was then released pending Juvenile Court proceedings.

Because the crime occurred when the suspect was 17 and a juvenile, police are withholding his name.

The suspect was allegedly one of three males who beat a third male in the early morning hours at Keawe and Kalakaua Streets.

The victim told responding officers he had been beaten by man brandishing a baseball bat and machete. As the victim attempted to flee, he said, he was also run over by a second man driving a car on Keawe Street.

The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Anyone with information about the crime or the other suspects is asked to call Detective Richard Miyamoto of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2379 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
