Report No. C16010032

Media Release (update)

A 29-year-old Puna man has died from injuries he sustained in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Kīlauea Avenue and Kawailani Street in Hilo on April 12.

He has been identified as Ryan W. Devaney of a Pāhoa address.

Responding to a 4:51 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit officers determined that Devaney was operating a 2001 Lincoln four-door sedan and traveling west on Kawailani Street when he ran the red light and was struck by a 2014 Peterbuilt rubbish truck traveling south on Kilauea Avenue and being operated by a 35-year-old Pāhoa man.

Devaney was taken to Hilo Medical Center and was then flown in critical condition to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died at 6:31 p.m.

The driver of the rubbish truck was not injured.

Police do not believe that alcohol, drugs or speed were factors.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information about the crash to call Officer Keith Nacis at 961-8119 or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

This is the 8th traffic fatality on Hawaiʻi Island this year compared with seven at this time last year.
