Media Release

An inmate from Hawaiʻi Community Correctional Center who was wanted for furlough violation was located Saturday and taken into custody.

During routine patrol at 1:06 a.m. Saturday, officers located 26-year-old Joshua Lopes-Keli in the passenger seat of a car in the parking lot of a building on Rainbow Drive in Hilo. The driver, 23-year-old Michaela Pacyao of Waikoloa, also was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear. When police were attempting to arrest them, Lopes-Keli attempted to retrieve a semi-automatic pistol from the car. Officers removed the weapon and arrested Lopes-Keli after a short foot chase.

Lopes-Keli and Pacyao were taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation. Later Saturday, detectives charged Pacyao with failure to appear. Her bail was set at $150.

Lopes-Keli was charged with escape, violating terms of furlough, terroristic threatening, resisting arrest, promoting a dangerous drug, possessing a detrimental drug, possessing drug paraphernalia and five firearms offenses. He was returned to HCCC with no bail on the furlough violation charge. Bail for the remaining charges was set at $104,000.

Both were scheduled to make their initial court appearances Monday (December 7).
