Media Release

East Hawaii detectives are investigating an attempted murder that occurred in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision in lower Puna early last night (May 1) at about 7:25 p.m.  Detectives with the department’s Vice section attempted to serve a search warrant on a vehicle at the intersection of Kahakai Boulevard and Moano Street. It was reported that the vehicle, with two occupants, accelerated rapidly toward one of the officers present and officers fired at the vehicle, striking it several times. Investigation thus far gives no indication that the gunfire struck any of the occupants.

The vehicle fled the scene and was subsequently found abandoned in another area of the subdivision. One of the vehicle’s occupants, 27-year-old Rinalee Shimizu of Pahoa, was located nearby and taken into custody.  Police are still searching for the second occupant.

This investigation is ongoing. A standard administrative investigation is also being conducted by the department’s Internal Affairs Division.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call Detective Alston Kimura at  961-2278. Individuals wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
