G-64466MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police investigators have determined that a female pedestrian who died Monday (April 16, 2001) had been struck by a hit-and-run vehicle before being run over by a second vehicle.

The results of an autopsy conducted on the victim, Felicia Hanohano, 48, of Pahoa, indicated she had been standing when struck.

The driver of a truck that ran over her, Emilio Agpaoa, had initially told police that the victim was already lying on the road when his truck ran over her. A witness present at the scene collaborated the driver’s statement. An inspection of Agpaoa’s truck also showed no signs of damage consistent with striking a standing individual.

Police believe that the vehicle that originally struck the victim was a pickup truck or similar kind of vehicle. It is probably damaged on the front end, possibly on the passenger side.

The accident involving Agpaoa, reported at 5:15 a.m. on Monday, occurred in front of the victim’s residence on Route 132 (Pahoa-Pohoiki Road) just south of the Route 130 intersection. The victim had been wearing dark clothing at the time.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area at the time of the accident and who noticed the victim or any unusual activity by another motorist — such as speeding, stopping on the side of the road, etc. — to call Officer William Torres of the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 961-2332. Anyone with information on a pickup truck with recent damage is also asked to call.

Police have classified the case as a negligent homicide investigation.
