MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii County Police Department issued a total of 738 citations for automobile seat belt violations during its recent “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

During the campaign to increase awareness of Hawaii’s seat belt laws, which ran May 13-June 7, 2002, police conducted 101 seatbelt enforcement projects throughout the Big Island.

The checkpoints also resulted in 25 citations for child restraint violations, 458 citations for other violations and seven arrests.

Sergeant Randy K. Apele, head of the Traffic Services Section, said that although the “Click It or Ticket” campaign has been completed, police officers would continue to enforce seat belt and child restraint safety regulations throughout the island.
