MEDIA RELEASE

Shortly after 7 p.m. Friday (January 4, 2002), South Kohala patrol officers responded to a reported shooting and traffic accident on Lina Poepoe Street in Waikoloa, South Kohala.

At approximately 7:25 p.m., the patrol officers arrested Albert Pacheco, 45, of Waikoloa, after it was determined that the male driver of a vehicle had shot the woman driver of another vehicle.

Pacheco is a detective assigned to the Area II (Kona) Criminal Investigation Section and was off-duty of the time of the shooting.

Pacheco was arrested at the scene without incident and was transported to the South Kohala station. From there, he was subsequently transported to the Hilo police station, where he is confined to the police cellblock pending further investigation.

The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives were still at the scene Saturday morning trying to reconstruct events leading to the shooting.

The release of the female victim’s name is being withheld pending fingerprint confirmation of her identity and notification of next of kin.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Pacheco had intentionally driven his vehicle into the victim’s car, blocking it, and then shot the victim several times. Pacheco reportedly knew the victim.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday (January 6, 2002) to determine the exact cause of death.
