Media Release

Big Island police are informing motorist that police will increase enforcement efforts on distracted driving by conducting islandwide checkpoints and daily roving patrols.

During these checkpoints and roving patrols, officers will concentrate on violators of electronic devise use while operating a vehicle, seat belt violations and child restraint violations.

In conjunction with the increase in enforcement, the Hawaiʻi Police Department’s Traffic Services Section organized a sign-waving event on Kamehameha Avenue in Hilo on Monday (April 2) to remind motorist about the dangers of distracted driving as well as the department’s year around fight against drunk driving.

The Traffic Services Section was supported by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Keaʻau Boys and Girls Club, Hawaiʻi County’s Department of Liquor Control, Cary Ichinose’s State Farm office and Big Island Substance Abuse Council (BISAC).
