MEDIA RELEASE

An 81-year-old man was killed in a two-car collision that occurred Saturday (December 2, 2000) at the intersection of Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) and the Glenwood, Puna, Transfer Station.

The victim was identified as Horace E. Lufkin, of a Mountain View address.

An investigation into the collision, which was reported at 7:17 a.m., indicated that Lufkin’s 1990 Hyundai two-door sedan was trying to make a left turn from the highway into the transfer station when it was struck by a 1980 Ford four-door sedan driven by Andrew Warren, 51, of Kurtistown.

Lufkin was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:51 a.m.

Warren and two passengers in his car — Leah Warren, 1, and Patricia Stauffer, 31, of Mountain View — were treated and released from the hospital.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing an investigation into the accident and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Saturday’s death was the 35th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 28 at the same time last year.
