During the week of March 11-17, 2002, Big Island police arrested 13 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 173 DUI arrests, an 8 percent decrease from the 188 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 457 major accidents so far this year, compared to 477 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent.
There have been 10 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year, an increase of 400 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to none during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
