During the week of April 3-9, 2000, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 349 DUI arrests, a 6 percent decrease from the 371 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 34 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 591, compared to 573 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.
There have been nine traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to three during the same period last year, an increase of 200 percent.
Two of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 22 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related.
