During the week of May 23-29, 2005, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 307 DUI arrests, compared to 435 during the same period last year, a decrease of 29 percent. The number of arrests by district were:

There have been 693 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,006 during the same period last year, a decrease of 31 percent.

There have been 15 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 19 for the same period last year, a decrease of 21 percent. There have been seven alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to six at this time last year, an increase of 17 percent. There have been two drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to eight at the same time last year, a decrease of 75 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
