During the week of July 30-August 5, 2001, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers arrested were involved in traffic collisions, and three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 463 DUI arrests, a 38 percent decrease from the 742 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 1,352 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,279 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
There have been 19 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 24 during the same period last year, a decrease of 21 percent. Six of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 11 at the same time last year, a decrease of 45 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
